Former Governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, returned to the detention facility of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) on Monday. He was taken back into custody after burying his late mother, who passed away at a hospital in Cairo, the capital of Egypt.
The former governor had been temporarily released on compassionate grounds by the ICPC on March 27, 2026, to attend to his late mother. His release was not backed by a court order.
Meanwhile, legal cases against him proceeded on Monday, leading to his re-arraignment. El-Rufai first appeared before the Kaduna State High Court over a separate charge filed by the anti-graft agency. The court, however, could not progress due to the absence of the second defendant in the matter, and the case was subsequently adjourned to April 10.
Following the adjournment, El-Rufai was taken to the Federal High Court in Kaduna, where his application for bail was scheduled for hearing. The court had earlier fixed March 31, 2026, for the hearing of the bail application. After the court appearances, the former governor was returned to ICPC custody pending further proceedings in the cases.
