Nigeria’s football future may well be shaped far from the glare of elite stadiums, on school pitches where raw talent is waiting to be discovered.

This vision is now gaining momentum as FirstBank of Nigeria headlines a new national youth tournament designed to find the next generation of Super Eagles.

The FirstBank Sam Okwaraji U-16 Secondary Schools Football Championship (Memoir Cup) has been unveiled as a strategic grassroots initiative aimed at identifying young talents capable of representing Nigeria at the U-17 World Cup.

Speaking at the launch held at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, described the competition as a vital pipeline for nurturing future stars.

The tournament, organised by the Samuel Okwaraji Foundation and endorsed by the Nigeria Football Federation among others, also seeks to immortalise the legacy of Samuel Okwaraji, a symbol of patriotism and excellence.

Managing Director of FirstBank, Olusegun Alebiosu, said the bank’s involvement reflects a deliberate investment in youth development and nation-building.

“This is more than football, it is about shaping character, building resilience and creating future leaders,” he noted, while urging more corporate bodies to support grassroots sports.

Founder of the initiative, Senator Osita Izunaso, assured that the competition would uphold strict integrity standards, including age verification and proper officiating.

Meanwhile, the Director-General of the National Institute for Sports, Philip Shaibu, opined that the initiative, which aims to inspire young Nigerians to combine sports with education, honours a national hero.

Beyond the game, other stakeholders, including the NFF General Secretary, Sanusi Mohammed, Director Secondary Schools Sports, Mrs Olabisi Joseph, SWAN president, Isaiah Benjamin, among others, say the championship offers a broader message that combining education with sport remains long term success for young Nigerians.
