2027 Elections in Jeopardy as INEC Fails to Recognise ADC Leadership Amid Court Dispute

Nigeria’s preparations for the 2027 general elections may be heading into uncertainty following the refusal of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to clearly recognise the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) after a contentious Court of Appeal ruling.

The crisis stems from Appeal No. CA/ABJ/145/2026 involving David Mark and Nafiu Bala Gombe, which has deepened internal divisions within the party. While one faction insists on the enforcement of the appellate court’s decision recognising a leadership shift, another argues that a pending suit before the Federal High Court in Abuja overrides any immediate action, urging INEC to maintain the status quo.

Despite receiving formal communications from opposing legal representatives, INEC has yet to take a definitive position on who leads the ADC, effectively leaving the party in a leadership vacuum. The Commission’s continued engagement with rival factions, including invitations to meetings and monitoring of disputed party activities, has further fueled allegations of disobedience to court orders.

Political observers warn that the unresolved leadership tussle could have far-reaching consequences, especially as parties begin early alignments ahead of 2027. Without a recognised leadership, the ADC risks exclusion from key electoral processes such as candidate nominations, party primaries, and official correspondence with INEC.

The situation has raised broader concerns about institutional clarity and the rule of law in Nigeria’s electoral system. Analysts argue that if left unresolved, the ADC crisis could set a dangerous precedent where internal party disputes derail participation in national elections, thereby narrowing democratic choices for voters.

With legal battles still ongoing and INEC treading cautiously, the uncertainty surrounding the ADC leadership signals potential instability in the political landscape, casting a shadow over the credibility and inclusiveness of the 2027 elections.
