United Nigeria Airlines has suspended a member of its staff following allegations of unprofessional conduct involving a passenger with reduced mobility, Ms. Doris Akonanya.

A statement by the airline’s spokesman, Chibuike Uloka, said the incident occurred during check-in for flight UN0526 from Abuja to Yenagoa on March 30, 2026.

The airline confirmed it had received an incident report detailing the alleged mishandling of the passenger, describing the matter as one it takes “very seriously.”

It emphasised that the safety, dignity and well-being of all passengers remain its top priority, stressing a zero-tolerance policy towards misconduct, discrimination or abuse, particularly involving passengers requiring special assistance.

The airline stated that the staff member would remain suspended pending the outcome of a full investigation into the matter.

It added that all relevant parties are being engaged to establish the facts, assuring that appropriate disciplinary measures would be taken in line with its zero-tolerance policy.

“We sincerely apologise to Ms. Akonanya and her family for the distress this incident has caused. This experience does not reflect our values, vision, or the standard of service we are committed to delivering,” the airline said.

Uloka explained that the airline had maintained direct contact with the affected passenger and her family, offering apologies and ensuring their concerns are addressed while keeping them informed of ongoing actions.

The airline also assured that it would continue to strengthen staff training, operational processes and oversight mechanisms to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.

It further expressed appreciation for public concern and understanding as investigations continue.
