The Ogun State Government is set to file criminal charges against Abubakar Adamu, driver of the stationary truck involved in the tragic road crash that claimed the lives of associates of former world heavyweight champion, Anthony Joshua, in December 2025.

At Thursday’s court proceedings, D.O. Ogunyomi, Ogun State senior counsel, took over the prosecution in the case against Adeniyi Kayode, driver of the Lexus SUV conveying Joshua and his friends at the time of the accident.

Ogunyomi urged the court to consolidate charges against both Kayode and Adamu, arguing that both drivers played roles in the fatal incident.

The request followed the legal advice issued by the Ogun Department of Public Prosecution (DPP), which recommended that Kayode be tried for reckless driving alongside the truck driver. Magistrate Olufunmilayo Somefun granted the application, approving the consolidation of charges.

The accident occurred on December 29, 2025, near the Sinoma area of Sagamu, Ogun State, when the SUV carrying Joshua and his associates rammed into a stationary truck parked by the roadside while travelling from Lagos.

Joshua survived with minor injuries, but two of his close associates — Kevin Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami — lost their lives. Ghami was Joshua’s longtime friend and strength and conditioning coach, while Ayodele served as his personal trainer.

Following the incident, police arrested Kayode and charged him with dangerous driving causing death, as well as reckless and negligent driving.

The case was later transferred to the DPP for review. During earlier proceedings on March 17, counsel to the DPP, R.D. Kadiri informed the court of fresh evidence requiring inclusion in the case, requesting more time.

However, Kayode’s counsel, Abiodun Olalekan, criticised the move, alleging that the prosecution was engaging in delay tactics and wasting the court’s time.

With the latest development, both drivers are now expected to face trial as the state intensifies efforts to secure justice for the victims.
