A fresh political storm has hit the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a faction of the party in Adamawa State announces the suspension of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, accusing him of fueling internal division.
Also suspended in the sweeping move are Babachir Lawal and Sadiq Ibrahim, the partyâs transition committee chairman, in what signals deepening cracks within the opposition party.
The announcement was made in Yola by factional chairman Raji Zumo, who declared that no memberâno matter how influentialâis above the partyâs rules.
âLet it be clearly stated, no individual, regardless of his status or influence, is above the law or the constitution of the African Democratic Congress, as long as he is a card-carrying member of the party,â Zumo said.
Zumo emphasized that the ADC stands firmly on discipline and the rule of law, insisting the decision followed internal consultations.
âThe African Democratic Congress is built on discipline, justice, and the supremacy of law.
In view of the foregoing and after executive consultation, the leadership of the ADC in Adamawa state hereby announces the immediate suspension of the following individuals from the party.â
According to him, the suspended figures were sanctioned for allegedly deepening divisions within the party.
âThose individuals are suspended for their roles in fostering disunity, creating parallel structures, undermining lawful authority, and disregarding a subsisting court order.â
He added that the drastic action was necessary to restore order and protect the partyâs integrity.
âThis action is taken in the best interest of the party to restore order, protect its dignity, and reaffirm our commitment to democratic values.â
The crisis is the latest twist in an ongoing leadership battle that has rocked the ADC since mid-2025. The turmoil intensified after a coalition reportedly took control of the partyâs leadership, triggering widespread disputes.
Tensions escalated further when Nafiu Bala, a former deputy national chairman, challenged the legitimacy of the leadership led by David Mark, claiming the process that brought him in was illegal.
With top figures now suspended and factions digging in, the ADC appears headed for a prolonged internal showdown one that could reshape its future ahead of upcoming political contests.
