ABUJA – The Labour Party has congratulated the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, on winning the 2026 Arthur Svensson International Prize, describing the honour as a landmark achievement for the Nigerian labour movement and a source of pride for the party.

Afrilensnews reports that Ajaero received the prestigious international award in Oslo, Norway, in recognition of what the Labour Party described as his decades of courageous service in defending workers’ rights, social justice, democratic freedoms and the dignity of labour.

In a press statement issued on Sunday by the Labour Party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Eluma Asogwa, the party said the award extends beyond Ajaero’s personal accomplishments and reflects the growing global recognition of the Nigerian labour movement.

The statement stressed that the Labour Party and the organised labour movement share deep constitutional, historical and ideological ties, noting that Ajaero’s recognition resonates strongly with the party’s founding principles.

“The Labour Party heartily congratulates the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, on his well-deserved conferment of the prestigious Arthur Svensson International Prize for 2026, an honour bestowed on him in Oslo, Norway, in recognition of his decades of courageous and selfless commitment to the defence of workers’ rights, social justice, democratic freedoms and the dignity of labour.”

According to the party, Ajaero’s emergence as the first Nigerian labour leader to receive the distinguished international prize underscores his outstanding contributions to advancing workers’ welfare and defending democratic values.

It further stated that his consistent opposition to policies considered detrimental to ordinary Nigerians, advocacy for improved wages and commitment to protecting civic freedoms have earned him widespread respect within and outside the country.

“That Comrade Ajaero is the first Nigerian labour leader to receive this distinguished international honour speaks volumes about his outstanding contributions to the advancement of workers’ welfare. His fearless resistance to anti-people policies spanning over three (3) decades in the struggle, his relentless advocacy for fair wages, and his unwavering defence of democratic space have earned him deserved global respect and admiration.”

The Labour Party also reaffirmed its solidarity with the NLC leadership, expressing confidence that the international recognition would encourage Ajaero to remain steadfast in championing the welfare of Nigerian workers and broader social and economic justice.

“On behalf of the leadership, members and supporters of the Labour Party across Nigeria and in the Diaspora, we congratulate Comrade Joe Ajaero on this historic achievement. We are confident that this honour will further strengthen his resolve to continue championing the cause of the Nigerian worker and the broader

struggle for social and economic justice.”

The Arthur Svensson International Prize is widely regarded as one of the world’s notable honours for individuals and organisations that have made significant contributions to the promotion of trade union rights, democracy and social justice.

Ajaero’s recognition is expected to further elevate Nigeria’s profile within the global labour movement while reinforcing ongoing campaigns for improved workers’ welfare and labour rights.
