The Labour Party has formally unveiled Dr. Chibuzo Okereke as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, describing him as a governance expert and reform-minded leader capable of steering Nigeria through its current challenges.

According to a statement issued on Friday in Abuja by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Eluma Asogwa, Dr. Okereke emerged through what the party described as a broad-based consensus among members and key stakeholders, a decision that was subsequently affirmed during a meeting held in the nation’s capital on May 30, 2026.

Announcing the development, the party stated that Dr. Okereke has earned national recognition for his contributions to public policy, legislative governance and institutional reforms.

“A distinguished governance expert, policy strategist and reform advocate, Dr. Okereke has built an impressive reputation as one of Nigeria’s leading voices on public policy, legislative governance and institutional development,” the statement said.

The Labour Party highlighted Dr. Okereke’s role as President of ERGAF-AFRICA Legislative Governance Innovation and Policy Hub, describing the organisation as a leading policy and legislative research institution.

It also noted that he serves as a legislative consultant to committees and ranking members of the National Assembly and lectures in the Department of Public Policy and Administration at Miva Open University, Abuja.

The party further pointed to his academic credentials, stating that he holds a PhD in Legislative Governance Studies and master’s degrees in Public Administration and Legislative Studies, both obtained with distinction.

Beyond academia and governance, the Labour Party said its candidate has remained actively involved in youth empowerment initiatives, educational development programmes and democratic reform efforts across the country.

“His leadership, intellectual depth and proven commitment to good governance embody the vision of competent, accountable and transformational leadership that Nigeria urgently requires at this critical moment,” the statement added.

The announcement places the Labour Party among the early political organisations making preparations for the 2027 presidential contest, which is expected to attract intense competition among major parties and emerging political movements.

Political observers say the choice of a technocrat and policy specialist could signal the party’s intention to campaign heavily on governance reforms, institutional strengthening, accountability and public sector efficiency.

However, Dr. Okereke’s national political appeal, grassroots mobilisation capacity and ability to compete against more established political figures are likely to come under scrutiny as the election season gathers momentum.

The Labour Party’s decision is also expected to trigger discussions within Nigeria’s political landscape regarding the role of policy experts and non-traditional politicians in the country’s leadership recruitment process.
