ABUJA — Former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, and ex-Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, on Sunday arrived at the national secretariat of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Abuja to a rousing استقبال from supporters.
The two prominent political figures, both former presidential candidates in the 2023 elections, were seen entering the party headquarters amid loud cheers, signaling a potentially significant shift in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obi, who flew the flag of the Labour Party in 2023, and Kwankwaso, the candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party, are understood to have recently moved into the NDC from the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Their presence at the secretariat is tied to a scheduled consultative meeting with key leaders of the party.
Although details of the closed-door discussions were not immediately disclosed, their joint appearance is already fueling speculation about a possible alliance or coordinated political strategy that could reshape opposition dynamics in the country.
The development follows a series of political realignments in recent days, including Obi’s earlier announcement of his decision to exit the ADC, while Kwankwaso had publicly maintained that “no decision yet” had been reached regarding his political future a stance now seemingly overtaken by events.Observers say the convergence of both leaders under the NDC platform, if formalized, could consolidate a sizeable voter base across key regions, potentially posing a challenge to established parties.
However, questions remain over internal party structures, power-sharing arrangements, and whether the coalition can sustain unity through the election cycle.
As of press time, officials of the NDC have yet to issue an official statement on the outcome of the meeting. More details are expected to emerge in the coming hours.
