The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has confirmed that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially obtained his payment receipt to contest under the party’s platform ahead of the 2027 presidential election, signalling a fresh political realignment within Nigeria’s opposition landscape.
The development, described by party insiders as part of a “new chapter” in the ADC’s evolving structure, is being framed as a strategic move toward expanding internal competition and strengthening the party’s visibility ahead of the next general election cycle. According to the
announcement, the formal presentation of nomination forms is scheduled for Monday at the ADC National Secretariat in Abuja.
Party messaging around the development emphasized themes of “national renewal, democratic inclusion, and people-driven leadership,” positioning the ADC as a platform seeking to attract high-profile political figures and broaden its electoral appeal. It also reiterated commitments to unity, economic recovery, security reform, and governance renewal as central pillars of its agenda going into 2027.
While the move is being celebrated within some political circles as a boost for opposition consolidation, it also raises questions about internal cohesion, power balancing, and how the ADC intends to manage competing ambitions within its structure as the election cycle approaches.
Analysts suggest that if the development is fully formalised, it could significantly reshape early opposition calculations ahead of 2027, potentially intensifying political negotiations, alliances, and strategic repositioning across party lines.
The ADC, however, has maintained that its platform remains open and competitive, insisting that its process is designed to encourage participation and strengthen democratic choice.
The coming days are expected to clarify the full scope of the arrangement as nomination procedures progress at the party’s national secretariat.
