The Labour Party has felicitated Nigerians on the occasion of the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, urging citizens not to lose faith in the country’s democratic journey despite prevailing economic and security challenges.
In a statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Eluma Asogwa on Friday, the party praised Nigerians for their resilience and commitment to democratic governance while honouring the sacrifices of pro-democracy heroes, particularly the late MKO Abiola and others who fought for the restoration of democracy.
Asogwa noted that Democracy Day provides an opportunity for reflection on the nation’s democratic progress and the need to safeguard the ideals for which many patriots made immense sacrifices.
He acknowledged that Nigeria’s democratic journey has witnessed unfulfilled aspirations and missed opportunities but stressed that citizens should remain hopeful about the country’s future.
“Democracy, despite its imperfections and occasional contradictions, remains the best form of government known to mankind because it places the people at the centre of governance and public affairs,” Asogwa said.
The Labour Party spokesman called on governments at all levels to intensify efforts to tackle insecurity, economic hardship, unemployment, hunger and infrastructure deficits, stressing that the dividends of democracy must reach ordinary Nigerians.
According to Asogwa, the party’s philosophy of equal opportunity and social justice aligns with the core principles of democracy, adding that a democratic system that does not guarantee a level playing field for all citizens and political actors falls short of its true purpose.
As the nation gradually moves towards another electoral cycle, he urged Nigerians to remain optimistic and committed to building a better country, assuring that the Labour Party remains dedicated to providing a credible platform for the realization of the people’s aspirations.
The party also maintained that it would continue to support leaders with proven character, competence and capacity to drive national development and prosperity.
The party wished Nigerians a happy Democracy Day and called for renewed commitment to democratic values, justice and national renewal.
