Former U.S. President Barack Obama has condemned political violence following the shooting incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, stressing that such acts have no place in a democratic society.

“Although we don’t yet have the details about the motives behind last night’s shooting at the White House Correspondents Dinner, it’s incumbent upon all of us to reject the idea that violence has any place in our democracy,” Obama said.

“It’s also a sobering reminder of the courage and sacrifice that U.S. Secret Service Agents show every day. I’m grateful to them – and thankful that the agent who was shot is going to be okay.”

The shooting occurred Saturday night at the Washington Hilton, where a gunman attempted to breach security at the high-profile event attended by top U.S. officials, journalists, and dignitaries. Law enforcement officials say the suspect, armed with multiple weapons, was intercepted by Secret Service agents before gaining access to the main venue, with one agent injured in the confrontation.

Authorities have confirmed the suspect is in custody, while investigations into his motive remain ongoing. Early indications suggest the attacker acted alone, though officials have not ruled out broader factors.

The incident triggered panic among attendees, many of whom took cover as security evacuated key figures, including President Donald Trump.

The White House Correspondents’ Dinner is traditionally a symbol of press freedom and democratic engagement in the United States. The attack has therefore heightened concerns about political violence and the safety of high-profile public events.

Security analysts say the incident could lead to tighter screening measures and a broader review of protective protocols for political gatherings. It may also intensify national conversations around political rhetoric, extremism, and the risks facing public officials and institutions.

Obama’s remarks align with a growing chorus of global leaders calling for unity and a firm rejection of violence in democratic systems, as the United States grapples with the implications of yet another high-profile security breach.
