Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has congratulated Nigerian football star Victor Osimhen following his decisive role in leading Galatasaray S.K. to the Turkish Süper Lig title.

Osimhen reportedly scored twice in the crucial victory that sealed the championship for the Turkish giants, further cementing his status as one of Nigeria’s biggest football exports and one of Africa’s most prolific strikers on the global stage.

In a statement shared on Monday, Obi praised the Super Eagles forward for his resilience, discipline and commitment, describing his achievements as a source of inspiration for millions of Nigerian youths struggling against economic hardship and limited opportunities.

“I want to join other fans in congratulating one of Nigeria’s many talented exports, Victor Osimhen, for successfully leading Galatasaray S.K. to the Turkish Süper Lig title with a brilliant performance, scoring twice in the decisive victory that sealed the championship,” Obi stated.

The former Anambra governor said Osimhen’s success once again demonstrates the enormous potential embedded in Nigerian youths when given the right support system and enabling environment to thrive.

“Your resilience, discipline, and talent continue to inspire millions of young Nigerians to believe in the power of hard work, dedication, and excellence. You have remained a proud ambassador of Nigeria on the global stage, bringing honour to our nation through your achievements and conduct. Nigerians are immensely proud of you and your continued success,” he added.

Obi also used the occasion to renew his criticism of what he described as the long-standing neglect of the sports sector in Nigeria, arguing that the country possesses abundant talents capable of excelling internationally if properly developed.

“I have often spoken about the transformative power of sports and the immense opportunities it offers to young people. This is why the persistent neglect of the sector in our country is deeply regrettable,” Obi said.

“The truth is that Nigeria is blessed with countless talents like Osimhen, waiting for the right leadership, support, and environment to rise, excel, and bring glory to the nation.”

The Labour Party chieftain further linked sports development to his broader vision for national growth, insisting that Nigeria can attain balanced progress across critical sectors under purposeful leadership.

“I reiterate that a new Nigeria, where all sectors develop simultaneously for the balanced growth and health of the nation, is possible,” Obi declared.

He concluded by wishing the striker greater accomplishments in the future.

“I wish Victor Osimhen even greater success in the years ahead,” he said.

Obi’s remarks come amid renewed conversations around Nigeria’s sports infrastructure, youth development policies and the growing number of Nigerian athletes finding success abroad despite domestic challenges.

Analysts say Osimhen’s achievements may further intensify calls for increased investment in grassroots football, talent discovery and sports administration reforms across the country.
