Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has announced the completion of the New Enugu International Hospital, describing the facility as a world-class quaternary healthcare centre designed to deliver specialised medical services beyond the capacity of conventional tertiary hospitals.
Mbah on Monday said the project was deliberately developed to meet the highest standards, with advanced equipment and capabilities aimed at providing comprehensive healthcare services under one roof.
The governor disclosed that the facility is not only intended to reduce the number of Nigerians travelling abroad for medical treatment but also to create an environment capable of attracting highly skilled Nigerian medical professionals back home.
“We wanted to build a facility that matched the quality we had in mind, and nothing was left to chance,” Mbah said, stressing that the hospital was built to last and designed to provide comprehensive care.
According to him, the ambition extends beyond reversing medical tourism, noting that the project seeks to give medical professionals the opportunity to develop their careers within Nigeria while encouraging those who have relocated abroad to return.
“We want to create an environment where our best medical professionals can build their careers here, and where those who have left can see a reason to come home,” he stated.
Mbah said the facility represents the kind of healthcare system Ndi Enugu and Nigerians deserve, expressing pride in the government’s efforts to bring the vision to reality.
The development is expected to strengthen Enugu’s position as a major healthcare destination in the South-East, potentially reducing overseas medical trips and improving access to advanced medical services for residents and Nigerians from other parts of the country.
“Tomorrow is here,” Mbah declared.
