Kano residents on Wednesday flooded the streets in a wave of celebration following the nomination of Murtala Garo as the state’s deputy governor.
Earlier, Abba Yusuf formally transmitted Garo’s name to the state house of assembly for screening and confirmation, setting off immediate excitement across the Kano metropolis and several local government areas, including Kabo.
Garo, who is the son-in-law of Atiku Abubakar, saw his nomination spark spontaneous street celebrations, with viral videos capturing large groups of youths on motorcycles and in cars chanting “Sai Abba” and “Sai Garo.”
Others marched through major roads carrying portraits of both the governor and the nominee, singing and dancing as the city turned festive.
Witnesses said the celebrations were largely peaceful despite the massive turnout.
Garo’s nomination comes weeks after the resignation of Abdussalam Gwarzo as deputy governor on March 27, 2026.
Speaking about the decision in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, the governor said the move followed extensive consultations with key political stakeholders aimed at strengthening governance and ensuring continuity.
“Following wide consultations with key stakeholders, the governor has requested the Assembly to grant the necessary approval for”
