The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has officially adopted Adewole Adebayo as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, a development that signals the party’s determination to position itself as a major opposition force ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Adebayo emerged through a consensus arrangement during the party’s national convention held in Bauchi on Saturday, as delegates and party leaders rallied behind his candidacy in what insiders described as an effort to avoid internal divisions and project unity early in the race.

The convention also produced Sadiq Gombe as the party’s national chairman following endorsements by delegates and state party leaders.

In his acceptance speech, Adebayo painted a grim picture of the country’s economic situation, arguing that government policies had worsened hardship across Nigeria and stripped many citizens of dignity despite their efforts to survive.

“For many who are working very hard, the economic policies of the government of the day make them look lazy because when they go home, their children ask why there is no food, why school fees are unpaid, and why sick relatives cannot access healthcare,” he said.

The SDP flagbearer also referenced the growing wave of migration among Nigerians seeking opportunities abroad, lamenting what he described as the collapse of hope within the country.

“Why am I in China hiding from immigration just to earn a living when I have a country of my own?” Adebayo asked.

The former presidential candidate further accused the political establishment of steering the country toward what he termed a dangerous concentration of power, warning against attempts to weaken opposition politics and democratic competition in Nigeria.

He, however, commended Bala Mohammed for ensuring a peaceful atmosphere during the convention and urged Nigerians to embrace democratic means in pursuing political change.

The emergence of Adebayo comes at a time when Nigeria’s opposition landscape is witnessing increasing political negotiations, defections and coalition talks ahead of 2027. Political observers believe the SDP is attempting to take advantage of growing public dissatisfaction over inflation, insecurity, unemployment and economic instability to expand its national relevance beyond its traditional support base.

After taking the oath of office alongside members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), Gombe declared that the SDP was prepared to provide what he described as a credible rescue platform for Nigerians.

“We want to assure Nigerians that the SDP will provide the needed alternative platform for the rescue mission of this country,” he said.

Gombe also promised transparent leadership and strict adherence to the party’s constitution and democratic principles.

Earlier, Usman Bugaje criticised the state of governance in the country, citing insecurity, rising fuel prices, unemployment, failing infrastructure and widespread poverty as evidence of worsening national conditions.

“The attempt by the ruling party to block the political space and eliminate competition and opposition is one of the most despicable offences today,” Bugaje said.

He further alleged that key democratic institutions, including the judiciary and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), were increasingly being manipulated for political purposes.

“That despite all these challenges, you are able to come in your numbers is a measure of your commitment and determination to change your fortunes for good,” he added.

“No sacrifice is too great in changing the fortunes of the nearly 300 million oppressed people.”

The adoption of Adebayo more than a year ahead of the presidential election may give the SDP strategic advantage in early mobilisation, coalition building and grassroots expansion.

Analysts say the move could also intensify pressure on other opposition parties still battling internal disputes and leadership uncertainty as preparations for the 2027 elections gradually gather momentum.
