Nigeria’s newly appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has pledged to strengthen the country’s 4D foreign policy framework while placing renewed emphasis on citizen diplomacy as she assumes leadership of the ministry.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu, who was recently elevated from Minister of State to substantive minister, expressed appreciation to Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the confidence reposed in her, promising to safeguard Nigeria’s interests and elevate its global standing.

Speaking during a dinner marking the end of a three-day induction programme for ambassadors and high commissioners-designate, the minister described her appointment as a call to greater service.

She urged diplomats and ministry officials to collaborate closely in projecting a positive image of Nigeria abroad while prioritising national interest.

In a message shared on her X handle, she reiterated her commitment, saying she was “truly honoured” and “humbled by your trust and confidence in my abilities.”

“I look forward to contributing even more to the continued success of the 4D Foreign Policy Priorities of the Renewed Hope Agenda, our citizen diplomacy imperatives, and reaffirm to the good people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, my unwavering commitment towards advancing our national interests in the global arena,” she said.

The 4D foreign policy doctrine — anchored on Democracy, Development, Demography, and Diaspora — was introduced under the administration of President Tinubu in 2023 and formally unveiled by former foreign affairs minister, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar. The framework is designed to reposition Nigeria from a largely inward-looking posture to a more assertive and citizen-focused global engagement strategy, with strong emphasis on economic diplomacy.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu’s elevation comes at a time Nigeria faces growing international scrutiny over security concerns and economic challenges, making her role critical in shaping foreign partnerships, attracting investment, and protecting Nigerians abroad.

Analysts say her success will depend on how effectively she translates the 4D doctrine into tangible diplomatic gains, particularly in strengthening diaspora relations, improving Nigeria’s global image, and leveraging foreign policy for economic growth. Failure to deliver could further strain Nigeria’s international reputation and limit opportunities for strategic alliances in an increasingly competitive global environment.
