Governor Peter Mbah has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transforming Enugu State into a leading centre for smart energy innovation through strategic partnerships with international development organisations and private sector stakeholders.
Afrilensnews reports that the governor disclosed this after receiving a delegation from Ubuntu Energy, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the United Kingdom Government, and Greenage Technologies, describing the collaboration as a major step towards expanding access to cleaner, smarter and more reliable electricity across the state.
According to Mbah, the goal extends beyond simply increasing electricity generation.
“The future of energy is not just about generating more power. It is about delivering smarter, cleaner, and more reliable electricity to the people who need it most.”
The governor noted that the partnership would accelerate the development of energy infrastructure capable of supporting critical public institutions and stimulating economic activities.
“I was pleased to receive a delegation from Ubuntu Energy, UNIDO, the UK Government, and Greenage Technologies as we strengthened our collaboration to make Enugu a hub for smart energy innovation. Through these partnerships, we are building the infrastructure to power our schools, hospitals, and ultimately thousands of homes and businesses across the state.”
He added that innovation and international cooperation remain central to his administration’s energy agenda.
“By embracing innovation and working with global partners, we are creating an energy future that drives learning, healthcare, enterprise.
The collaboration brings together government, development agencies and technology firms at a time when many Nigerian states are seeking alternative energy solutions to address persistent electricity shortages and improve power reliability.
Enugu has increasingly positioned itself to attract investments in renewable energy, smart grids and embedded power systems aimed at supporting industrialisation and improving public service delivery.
If successfully implemented, the initiative could enhance electricity supply to schools, hospitals, businesses and residential communities, reduce dependence on unstable national grid power, attract fresh investments into the state’s energy sector and strengthen Enugu’s reputation as a destination for technology-driven economic growth.
The governor’s announcement has generated positive reactions from many residents and observers on social media, with supporters describing the partnership as another indication of the administration’s focus on infrastructure, innovation and sustainable development.
Others, however, urged the government to ensure that the collaboration translates into visible improvements in electricity supply for communities across the state rather than remaining at the level of policy announcements.
The development is expected to reinforce Enugu’s ongoing efforts to build a more resilient energy system while supporting education, healthcare, commerce and long-term economic expansion.
