Former governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Kogi state, Murtala Ajaka, has formally declared his intention to contest the Kogi East senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a statement shared via his Facebook page on Saturday, Ajaka said the decision followed sustained pressure from stakeholders across the district, including elders, youth groups, and political associates urging him to seek representation at the national assembly.
“I have received countless calls, hosted numerous visits, and engaged in meaningful discussions with elders, political associates, youth groups, friends, and well-meaning stakeholders across Kogi East and beyond,” he said. “These conversations have consistently centered on the future of our politics, the direction of our people, and the need for purposeful representation. Many have urged me, with sincerity and conviction, to step forward and offer myself for service in the Senate.”
He added that a recent visit by a delegation of Kogi East elders reinforced his resolve, describing their intervention as a defining moment in his decision-making process.
“While I have taken time to reflect carefully on these calls, one moment that stood out profoundly was the recent visit by a respected delegation of Kogi East elders who came to my home. Their counsel, wisdom, and unity of purpose further reinforce the responsibility we all share toward the progress and development of our land.
“In respect of the wishes of our people, in honour of the prevailing understanding among stakeholders, and in the overriding interest of peace, unity, and collective advancement, I have decided to answer this call. I will, therefore, offer myself to serve as the Senator representing Kogi East Senatorial District.
“This decision is also firmly guided by my commitment to the stability, unity, and progress of our party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).”
Ajaka recently returned to the APC after defecting to the SDP ahead of the 2023 governorship election in Kogi. He finished second in that poll with 259,052 votes, behind APC’s Usman Ododo, who secured 446,237 votes to emerge winner.
His latest move signals an early buildup to the 2027 electoral cycle in Kogi East, a district expected to witness intense political realignments. Analysts say Ajaka’s return to the APC and senatorial ambition could reshape intra-party dynamics, particularly as he hinted at further consultations with Governor Ododo, suggesting efforts to secure establishment backing within the ruling party.
