The National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, Ken Asogwa, has declared that the party possesses the political strength and structure to produce another presidential candidate with the stature and national appeal of Peter Obi.
Barr. Asogwa made the remark during an appearance on Channels Television, amid growing discussions about the future of the Labour Party and Obi’s political standing ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“The Labour Party that produced the former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has the capacity to produce someone of commensurate stature,” Asogwa stated during the programme.
His comments come at a time when internal debates and alignments within the opposition space have intensified, with questions emerging over the party’s cohesion, leadership direction, and preparations for the next electoral cycle.
Peter Obi, who emerged as one of the most influential opposition figures during the 2023 presidential election, significantly boosted the Labour Party’s national profile and electoral performance, especially among young and urban voters.

Political observers say Asogwa’s statement may be interpreted as an attempt by the party leadership to project institutional strength beyond any single political figure, while also signaling confidence in its ability to remain competitive irrespective of future alliances or defections.
The remark is also likely to fuel conversations within Nigeria’s opposition landscape over succession, party structure, and the Labour Party’s strategy heading into 2027.
